Clinical trials

The European Union Clinical Trials Register   allows you to search for protocol and results information on:
  • interventional clinical trials that were approved in the European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA) under the Clinical Trials Directive 2001/20/EC
  • clinical trials conducted outside the EU/EEA that are linked to European paediatric-medicine development

  • EU/EEA interventional clinical trials approved under or transitioned to the Clinical Trial Regulation 536/2014 are publicly accessible through the
    Clinical Trials Information System (CTIS).

The EU Clinical Trials Register currently displays   43881   clinical trials with a EudraCT protocol, of which   7295   are clinical trials conducted with subjects less than 18 years old.   The register also displays information on   18700   older paediatric trials (in scope of Article 45 of the Paediatric Regulation (EC) No 1901/2006).

Phase 1 trials conducted solely on adults and that are not part of an agreed paediatric investigation plan (PIP) are not publicly available (see Frequently Asked Questions ).

    E. General Information on the Trial
E.1 Medical condition or disease under investigation
    E.1.1Medical condition(s) being investigated
This study is a pilot study to test the effect of Cerazette minipill use before Nexplanon implant insertion to predict the bleeding pattern. The total subject number of 90, divided into two arms of about 45 is predicted to be suitable to be able to detect the changes in the bleeding pattern. Descriptive statistics will be used.
E.1.1.1Medical condition in easily understood language
to test the effect of Cerazette minipill use before Nexplanon implant insertion to predict the bleeding pattern.
E.1.1.2Therapeutic area Body processes [G] - Reproductive physiologi cal processes [G08]
    MedDRA Classification
E.1.3Condition being studied is a rare disease No
    E.2 Objective of the trial
    E.2.1Main objective of the trial
To examine how well 3 month preceding use of Cerazette predicts the bleeding pattern during the first 6 months of use of Nexplanon.

    E.2.2Secondary objectives of the trial
To examine how well 3 month preceding use of Cerazette predicts adverse events and well-being during later Nexplanon use.
    E.2.3Trial contains a sub-study No
    E.3Principal inclusion criteria
Healthy women of fertile age, 15-40 years of age, with regular menstrual cycles (period 23-35).
    E.4Principal exclusion criteria
-Immediate previous use of progestin only contraception within 2 months
    - Known or suspected pregnancy
    - Acute tromboembolic disorder
    - Presence or history of hepatic disease, as long as the liver function values have not returned to normal
    - Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
    - Known or suspected sex-steroid influenced malignancies (e.g. breast cancer)
    - Hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any of the excipients of the medicines
    - Pregnant or breast feeding within 6 weeks
    - The use of other medicinal products that might interact with contraceptive steroids and affect the efficacy of contraceptives and/or might may lead to bleeding irregularities (especially medicines that induce the liver enzyme systems such as cytochrome P450). Examples of active substances are: phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, bosentan, carbamatzepine, rifampicin and medicinal products or herbal preparations containing ST.John's wort and to a lesser extend oxcarbazepine, topiramate, felbamate and griseofulvin.

    E.5 End points
    E.5.1Primary end point(s)
The primary endpoint will be the total number of bleeding days per 90 days reference period.
E.5.1.1Timepoint(s) of evaluation of this end point
Bleeding patters during all five 90 day periods will be compared.
Please see protocol for further details
    E.5.2Secondary end point(s)
Secondary endpoints will be number of bleeding episodes and frequency of prolonged bleeding according to WHO definitions.
E.5.2.1Timepoint(s) of evaluation of this end point
Adverse events will be analyzed as well as the acceptance of the method. Well-being questionnaires will be used.
